The Offering the Most Sacred of it all – the Love of God Through the Acts of Charity:

UOC of the USA Offers yet Another Charitable Gift of Love

“At times it is very difficult to express the pain that I feel at the loss of my husband and a father of my children. The most painful moments are the ones when I spend the time with my youngest son, - he looks so much like my husband…”

Words like these ones were uttered at the meeting of His Grace Bishop Daniel with about 25 individuals that either lost their loved ones or suffered serious wounds in the ingoing war conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Fulfilling the mandate of the clergy and the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and with the blessing of the primate of the UOC of the USA His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Vladyka Daniel, being in Ukraine on various assignments relating to the ministry outreach programs, visited Ivano-Frankivsk State Office building on July 4-5, 2015, meeting with the representatives of Ukrainian government as well as members of the families of the fallen and wounded soldiers of Ukraine.

The first deputy head of Ivano-Frankivsk State Government Mr. Oleksandr Lewytskyy welcomed Bishop Daniel to the government’s sate building, reflecting upon the sacrifices of hundreds of Ivano-Frankisvk state residents that have been called to serve their country in the time of the worst political and war conflict in modern day history of Ukraine.

In the presence of journalists and TV channels correspondence Vladyka Daniel met with the children, mothers, sisters and wives of the wounded and fallen heroes. Some of them shared their painful stories; others simply shed tears and listened to the stories of others; yet others hoped to hear the words of consolation and searched for spiritual and mental peace in the times of horrific realities… and those words of encouragement and prayer were offered by His Grace. The bishop spoke of the importance of spiritual and mental care for the wounded and the families of survivors. Reaching out to a newborn child that never had the privilege to see his fallen father-hero, bishop Daniel offered a blessing for the family, sharing with all in attendance a small prayer card-icon, which should remain as a sign of God’s love and peace.

All together $25,000 was distributed to the families of the wounded and fallen. People in Ivano-Frankivsk and Kyiv regions became the beneficiaries of love of so many parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, especially the faithful of Pokrova of the Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox parish (Philadelphia, PA) that recently merged with St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia, PA, making a donation of $50,000 to the special fund of the Consistory of the UOC of the USA, providing assistance to those in need in Ukraine. (The first $25,000 were previously delivered by the Church to those in need of assistance in the time of war).

Bidding farewell to the staff of Ivano-Frankivsk state offices, His Grace Bishop Daniel met once again with the First Deputy of the State Government Mr. Oleksandr Lewytskyy, discussing a variety of ministry projects that the UOC of the USA could assist in fulfilling, especially in caring for the children of the local handicapped orphanages. In conclusion, grateful Mr. Lewytskyy presented Vladyka Daniel with a book on the history of Ivano-Frankivsk religious and secular architecture.

Wounded, refugees, orphans, widows and families of those that live through the painful pages of physical loss – these are the beneficiaries of love of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. Thank you from the people of Ukraine to the Ukrainian Orthodox community of the United States of America for offering the most sacred of it all – the love of God through the acts of charity.
