ADULT EDUCATION / ENRICHMENT GROUPS
What makes for a successful Adult Study Group?
X Study groups work best when there is a Leader's Guide and/or Participants' Study Guide.
The following texts offer either a
a. Study Guide or Reflection Questions at the end of each chapter or within the text, or
b. Reflection Questions have been written for each session. Books can be ordered from Light & Life, DRE-GOA, Conciliar Press, or Seminary Bookstores.
X A “Kick-Off” Event is a superb way to begin an Adult Education/Enrichment Series. Contact me for a one-day Retreat.”
X Before the start of what I call the “Theosis Series” (Core Study - Numbers 1,2 & 3 below), The Study Group needs a basic book on the Orthodox Faith to provide a common ground. Once The Study Group completes the Core Study, further studies can be from # 4-10.
X In addition, (a) individuals are willing to commit to a 6-8-10 week study more easily than an ongoing program, and (b) a holiday break is necessary.
X The Core Study has been used successfully in both a Greek and OCA parish in Ohio.

JR & SR HIGH RESOURCES
Compiled by Phyllis Meshel Onest, M.Div.
Many parishes combine Grades 9th through 12th into one Class. Whether this is done because of the number of available students, or with the idea that AFTER eight years of catechetical training and the emphasis should shift to a practical application of the faith in one's life, it does not mean that didactic presentations have ended. We are required to CONTINUE presenting additional material to the high school student as needed in order to prepare them for the life beyond Church School.
Objectives for Grades 9-12: High School Students should:
1. Take an active participatory role in the liturgical year, becoming knowledgeable of its details and conversant with such things as the Triodion, the Pentecostarion and the balance of the ecclesiastical cycle. They could sing in the choir, be readers, and be actively a part of the charitable activities (collect, deliver things, etc.), and assume a stewardship role in the life of the parish.
2. Know and understand the unique Orthodox aspects of a religious life.
3. Be able to apply the teachings of the Faith to everyday life and situations (drugs, sex, abortion, creation, worship, etc.).
4. Know the meanings of the compiled Vocabulary in the Preschool – Grade 6 textbooks of the Greek Archdiocese Curriculum.
For this to happen, a High School program needs to:
1. Introduce our students to the issues and situations of the world.
2. Identify the unique Orthodox characteristics (monasticism, theology, worship, and role in the world, social issues).
3. Integrate Scripture, Church Fathers, Doctrine, Hymns, Icons, Church Services.
4. Present the Orthodox teaching and maintain the Orthodox Ethos.
The following 6 Units – [1] Comparative Religions, [2] Eschatology, [3] Marriage & Family Life, [4] Modern Ethical Issues, [5] Service & Mission, [6] Spiritual Life - can be rotated over the course of four years, and even returned to for another level of understanding. Other Units may also be developed. Within each unit are suggested Books, CD-ROM' and Videos resources. It is not an exhaustive list.
GENERAL RESOURCES
X The Archdiocese Website http://www.goarch.org section Our Faith has a variety of articles on many subjects included on this list.
X Conciliar Press Booklets [CP] offer a concise overview of a topic.
X The Way, The Truth, The Light is the newest textbook from the OCEC. Grades 8-12. Excellent resource!
X The Greek Archdiocese Middle School/Teen Series should be used with Jr. & Sr. High classes before using other materials.
X The ORTHODOX STUDY BIBLE contains many articles and reference materials, as well as footnotes.
X THE BIBLE AND THE HOLY FATHERS by Johanna Manley is the best resource for integrating the Church Fathers into a lesson.
1. The daily Epistle and Gospel readings have commentary by Church Fathers.
2. The Appendices contain a Concordance and Topical Index that can be used as cross-references to find out which Church Fathers wrote on specific verses or topics. Especially useful in conjunction with non-Orthodox and Orthodox materials that include Bible verses. As Orthodox Christians of true faith, we look to the Fathers for wisdom and guidance.
X Use the “Talksheets” series, available from Youth Specialties to engage the students. Some tie in with the topics below. More Youth Specialty resources are listed at the end of this section.

LENTEN BULLETIN BOARD IDEAS
Does your parish use the Weekly Bulletins from Vestal (the ones with the icons)? Each week I toss mine in a box marked “Bulletins” and sorted by “Men Saints,” “Women Saints,” “Feast Days,” “Holy Week,” “Pre-Lenten Sundays,” “Sundays of Lent,” “Angels,” etc. When I need icons, I sort through the box and trim them to size. Don’t have access to these icons, use the ones from the Come Bless the Lord Icon Packet.
1. Sundays of the Triodion and the Events of Holy Week in Icons Cover the board with colored paper. Start in the bottom right corner and place the icons in a clockwise spiral in order by date so that Pascha ends in the center. Add the dates and titles below each icon. Connect them with purple crepe paper. Add a title such as “Marking Our Path to Pascha.”
2. Paschal Greeting in Various Languages [On website under “Church School Director Resources,” “Bulletin Board Ideas”]
3. Pascha Eggs: The Resurrection Story for Orthodox Christian Children: This egg carton project can also be used as a basis for a bulletin board. Each page can be enlarged and placed on the bulletin board. Add the item itself (if possible) or a picture of the item or an icon or drawing as a teaching tool! [On website under “Lent & Pascha Resources.”]

Students write and present a play. This unit on Mission in the Church tells the story of how the Good News delivered by Jesus has been proclaimed for 2,000 years by His disciples and apostles, from Jerusalem to the local parishes of which we are members. / DRE-GOA, OCPC, OCEC
These two books are written by Angeline Eliakopoulos, a retired school teacher, who has taught and directed a church school for many years. The books have a variety of uses, VCS is but one.

VCS PROGRAMS DEVELOPED BY

123 Gilkeson Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15228 / 412-833-3355. $50.00 donation benefits the Orthodox Christian Mission Center in St. Augustine, Florida. Reproduced at the local level. These five programs have been developed for the parish and were to be updated as they were cycled through. It appears that this has not happened. The photocopy quality runs from good to poor at times. In each program, the Teaching Objectives need reworked by an educator.

I would be pleased to work with anyone developing a VCS program, or review a VCS program to be shared with other parishes. Our children also attend non-Orthodox VBS programs that are colorful and full of interesting handouts. Our work must look clean and crisp since it is in B&W. The crafts need to be ones that can go in prayer corners or hung on the wall or be given as gifts. If we use icons, we must teach the students that the icon is special in our church and used in prayer and worship. Icons are not toys.
The following programs are out-of-print, but a nearby Romanian Orthodox [OCA] parish may have a file copy that you can reproduce. If that is not an option, contact me.
