Transfigured in Christ: A Prayerful Visit to Sts. Peter And Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Millville, NJ

On a warm Sunday morning, the faithful of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Millville, New Jersey, gathered with joyful anticipation. The great feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ had just been celebrated, and on this day, the parish awaited the arrival of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

As the hierarch approached the holy temple, children greeted him with flowers in their hands, their innocent smiles radiating the joy of the feast. Representatives of the parish administration and their pastor, the Very Reverend Fr. Orest Poukhalsky, extended a heartfelt welcome, asking for the Archbishop’s prayers for the people and the nation of Ukraine. With deep pastoral warmth, Archbishop Daniel responded that, as we rejoice in the mystery of the Transfiguration, he was lifting up Ukraine before the Lord, praying that God’s light might shine upon its people and guide them through the darkness of war.

The Divine Liturgy unfolded in solemn beauty. The temple was filled with the fragrance of incense and the harmonious voices of the faithful, united in heartfelt prayer. On this day, three young parishioners were welcomed into the full sacramental life of the Church, receiving the Holy Mysteries of Penance and the Eucharist for the first time. As they approached the Chalice, they were met by Christ Himself in the fullness of His love and mercy - a moment of heavenly joy for them and for the entire parish family.

Following the proclamation of the Holy Gospel, Archbishop Daniel preached a sermon that touched every heart. He spoke of the fruits traditionally brought for the Transfiguration blessing  - fruits that begin as seeds, grow into plants, blossom with beauty, and mature into nourishment. In the same way, he said, each of us is a tree in the vineyard of Christ. The Divine Gardener calls us to bear fruit - not only the fruit of the earth, but the fruit of our lives, shaped by love, patience, faith, and mercy. Such fruit, when offered to God, becomes a living testimony of our transformation in Christ.

The Archbishop reminded all that spiritual growth is never instant; it is a lifelong journey, watered by grace, pruned through repentance, and strengthened by the sunlight of God’s love. Just as the disciples beheld Christ’s divine glory on Mount Tabor, we too are called to be transfigured — to allow His light to shine through us so that the world may see His love.

The day was further blessed by the presence of the Mayor of Millville, the Honorable Benjamin Romanick, who has long supported the local Ukrainian community. As a sign of gratitude, Archbishop Daniel presented him with a commemorative Trident bearing the emblem of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. In addition, several parishioners received similar tokens of appreciation for their steadfast support of humanitarian aid to Ukraine during these years of unjust aggression.

Addressing the faithful, Archbishop Daniel made a heartfelt appeal for continued and intensified prayer and fasting in the coming week, coinciding with a high-level meeting between the U.S. President and the leader of Russia. Quoting the words of Christ, he reminded all that “this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21). He urged the faithful to pray for a just peace - not one built on political compromise or the surrender of lands, but one that honors the dignity, freedom, and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people. “True peace,” he said, “is not merely the signing of agreements; it is the healing of wounds, the restoration of justice, and the protection of life.”

The liturgical celebration concluded with a festive luncheon, held in honor of the children who had received the Holy Mysteries and, above all, in honor of the people of Ukraine. The atmosphere was uplifted by the voice of a seminarian from St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, who sang hymns dedicated to the protection of the Mother of God over her children.

In his closing remarks, Archbishop Daniel expressed profound gratitude to the parish for their generous donations - over $1,600 collected that day for humanitarian aid to Ukraine - and for their tireless commitment to prayer. “Your prayers and your love,” he said, “are seeds planted in the soil of God’s Kingdom. They will bear fruit not only here in Millville, but in the lives of those who suffer, in the hearts of those who despair, and in the hope of those who await deliverance.”

As the faithful departed the church that day, the lesson of the Transfiguration lingered: that in Christ, we are called to be transformed, to bear good fruit, and to shine with His light - so that our very lives may become a living testimony of God’s love in the world.
