On this dreadful day, August 27, 2025, our hearts are shattered by the tragic mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and Church in Minneapolis. During a morning Mass, a lone gunman opened fire, killing two innocent children, ages 8 and 10, and injuring 17 others, including 14 young children and three elderly parishioners.

I have personally been in touch with the pastors of St. George/St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Minneapolis, as well as St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Arden Hills. I am profoundly relieved to report that none of our Ukrainian Orthodox parishioners or their relatives were physically harmed. Yet our mourning does not stop at parish boundaries - we stand in solidarity with the grieving families, the children, teachers, and staff of the school, and the entire Catholic and wider Minneapolis community.

Together with me, our beloved spiritual father and Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, offers his heartfelt prayers and condolences. His paternal heart, filled with love and compassion, is today especially near to all who suffer. Metropolitan Antony lifts his prayers before the throne of God - for the eternal repose of the two children whose lives were so cruelly taken, for the healing of the injured, and for the consolation of parents and teachers now bearing a cross of grief heavier than words can express.

This tragedy once again reminds us: while the possession of firearms may be protected by our Constitution, that right carries with it the profound responsibility to safeguard the sanctity of human life. Weapons in the hands of those unable to use them responsibly become instruments of death - what I sorrowfully call “weapons of mass distraction” - tearing apart the safety of our streets, our schools, our churches, and our hearts.

Our Christian calling is to save lives, not to destroy them. Therefore, we must dedicate ourselves to wise and compassionate dialogue about responsible gun ownership - background checks, licensing, safe storage, and vigilant community awareness - not as abstract political talking points, but as moral imperatives rooted in the sanctity of life and the salvation of souls.

In the midst of this unspeakable tragedy, our faith does not abandon us. God’s presence is revealed not in the absence of suffering, but in the outpouring of compassion within it. Metropolitan Antony and I call upon all believers to pray - for the eternal rest of the two young souls taken from us; for the speedy recovery of the wounded; and for the strength and endurance of grieving families.

Let us be consoled by the words of Psalm 34: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.”And let us be inspired by the words of St. John Chrysostom: “If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice.” May we recognize Christ in every grieving parent, every weeping child, every resilient teacher.

May our words become action. May our prayers awaken change. May violence give way to peace, and mourning to hope. Together, we must labor so that no more tears of mothers and fathers are shed in sanctuaries meant for prayer and learning. For every life is sacred, and every child is a gift from God.

May the Lord grant mercy, healing, and courage to all those affected.

У цей страшний день, 27 серпня 2025 року, наші серця сповнені болю через трагічну масову стрілянину в католицькій школі та церкві Благовіщення у Міннеаполісі. Під час вранішньої Божественної Літургії злочинець відкрив вогонь, убивши двох невинних дітей віком 8 та 10 років, та поранивши 17 осіб, серед яких 14 дітей і троє літніх парафіян.

Я особисто поспілкувався з настоятелями парафій Святого Юрія та Святого Михаїла в Міннеаполісі, а також парафії Святої Катерини в Арден-Гіллс. З глибоким полегшенням повідомляю, що жоден із парафіян чи їхніх родичів з нашої української православної громади не постраждав. Однак наше горе не має меж - ми єднаємося у скорботі з родинами загиблих, з дітьми, вчителями та співробітниками школи, а також з усією католицькою і ширшою спільнотою Міннеаполіса.

Разом зі мною свої молитви і співчуття складає і наш духовний отець та Предстоятель Української Православної Церкви США Митрополит Антоній. Його серце, сповнене батьківської любові й милосердя, сьогодні особливо близьке до всіх постраждалих родин. Він молиться перед престолом Господнім за вічний упокій душ невинно вбитих дітей, за зцілення поранених, за розраду батьків і вчителів, котрі несуть цей нестерпний хрест скорботи.

Цей жах знову нагадує нам: хоча володіння зброєю може бути захищене нашою Конституцією, це право несе із собою і величезну відповідальність - берегти святість людського життя. Зброя в руках тих, хто не здатний нею відповідально користуватися, стає знаряддям смерті – «зброєю масового відволікання», адже вона руйнує безпеку наших вулиць, наших храмів, наших шкіл і наших сердець.

Наше християнське покликання - рятувати життя, а не нищити його. Саме тому ми повинні віддати себе на служіння мудрому й співчутливому діалогу про розумний контроль за обігом зброї - перевірки біографічних даних, ліцензування, безпечне зберігання, пильність громад - не як абстрактним політичним гаслам, а як глибоким моральним імперативам, заснованим на святині життя і спасінні душ.

У вирі цього невимовного горя наша віра нас не залишає. Присутність Божа проявляється не у відсутності страждання, а у хвилях співчуття серед нього. Я разом із Митрополитом Антонієм закликаю всіх вірних до молитви - за вічний спочинок двох дітей, життя яких було відібрано; за швидке одужання поранених; за мир і витривалість для скорботних родин.

Хай нас утішать слова Псалма 33(34): «Близький Господь до скорботних серцем і смиренних духом спасає». І хай нас надихнуть слова святителя Іоана Золотоустого: «Якщо ти не побачиш Христа в жебракові при дверях храму, то не побачиш Його і в Чаші». Нехай ми пізнаємо Христа в кожному скорботному батькові чи матері, у кожній заплаканій дитині, у кожному стійкому вчителеві.

Хай наші слова перетворяться на дії. Хай наші молитви пробудять суспільні зміни. Хай насильство поступиться місцем миру, а скорбота - надії. Разом будемо трудитися, щоб більше ніколи материнські й батьківські сльози не проливалися в святинях, призначених для молитви й навчання. Бо кожне життя - безцінне, і кожна дитина - дар Божий.

Нехай Господь дарує милосердя, зцілення і мужність усім постраждалим.
