In the cold silence of winter’s approach, when war-torn towns tremble beneath the weight of fear and families cling to hope as to a fragile thread, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA once again follows in the footsteps of Saint Nicholas, extending the warm and saving hands of Christlike compassion to the smallest victims of Russia’s brutal aggression - the children of Ukraine.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, and in close, brotherly cooperation with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine under the leadership of His Eminence Metropolitan Serhii of Donetsk Eparchy, the Church continues its sacred ministry of delivering Gifts of Love to children living in the devastated villages and towns of the Donbas region.

And just as Saint Nicholas quietly placed gifts into the hands of the poor and suffering centuries ago, the faithful of the UOC of the USA now become his living helpers, carrying hope across oceans and into the trembling hearts of Ukraine’s youngest survivors.

Very often at personal risk, Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov and his devoted wife Natalia travel to remote corners of Eastern Ukraine, where shattered homes, abandoned schools, and makeshift shelters testify to the cruelty of bombardments. Together they bring boxes of winter clothing, fruit, candy, toys, blankets, hygiene items, and essential supplies - tangible signs that the children of Ukraine are not forgotten.

In the Donbas region, under the guidance of Metropolitan Serhii, a temporary humanitarian hub has been established to receive and distribute these precious shipments. There, the smallest of Ukraine’s surviving heroes - many displaced, many orphaned, all traumatized - receive fruit, sweets, warm coats, and toys that rekindle their childhood joy amid the ruins.

These gifts are purchased through the loving donations of parishioners, families, youth groups, and supporters throughout the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA - especially through the annual philanthropic campaign “The Hands and Helpers of Saint Nicholas.”

Every dollar becomes warmth. Every toy becomes hope. Every act of generosity becomes a sermon preached without words.

In this blessed season of the Feast of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Church remembers the holy bishop who saved the poor, defended the powerless, delivered the persecuted, and placed gifts quietly into the hands of the needy.

Saint Nicholas never sought praise. He never waited for recognition. He simply loved.

And today, through the charitable work of the UOC of the USA, his spirit continues to live - shining through the darkness of war, bringing warmth to trembling hands and joy to frightened faces.

His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, who oversees the churchwide charitable initiatives for Ukraine, offered moving reflections on this sacred ministry: “In these days surrounding the Feast of Saint Nicholas and the Fast of Saint Philip, as we prepare for the Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Church reminds us that Christian giving is not merely about sharing gifts with those close to us.

True giving is the offering of ourselves to a stranger - especially to a suffering child whose home has been destroyed, whose village is unsafe, whose family now lives in temporary shelters.

Every donation, every toy, every winter coat touches a life. Be the one who touches the life of a child.”

He continued: “The Church is profoundly grateful to the parishioners and friends of the UOC of the USA. Your gifts of love bring warmth to families and help them endure the harshness of winter. As the months ahead grow colder and more difficult, your continued generosity becomes not only desirable - it becomes crucial. Thank you for being instruments of Christ’s mercy.”

From New Jersey to Illinois, from California to Maryland, from rural parishes to bustling urban communities, the faithful have poured out their care in abundance. Their generosity flows across the ocean, reaching children who often stand ankle-deep in rubble yet smile with childlike wonder when handed a simple chocolate bar or a plush toy.

For them, such a gift is not merely a treat. It is a message: “You are not alone. Your brothers and sisters in Christ remember you. We love you.”

The work continues. The needs grow. Winter approaches. And the children wait.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA invites all faithful to participate in this sacred mission. No offering is too small. No gesture of compassion is insignificant.

One gift can warm a child. One prayer can protect a family. One act of kindness can change a life.

In the spirit of Saint Nicholas and in preparation for the birth of our Savior, let us continue to be bearers of Christ’s hope, weaving threads of love into the torn fabric of a wounded nation.

Be the one to touch a life today.
