NEW YORK CITY, NY - With hearts uplifted in prayer and thanksgiving to Almighty God, the faithful of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City joyfully gathered to celebrate the Great and Holy Feast of Pentecost, one of the most sacred and theologically profound feast days of the Orthodox Christian Church. The celebration was made especially meaningful by the archpastoral visit of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, who presided over the Divine Liturgy with the clergy, seminarians, and faithful parishioners.

As Metropolitan Antony entered the holy temple, he was warmly welcomed by the pastor of the parish, Very Reverend Fr. Todor Mazur, together with members of the Parish Board of Administration and faithful parishioners. Offering the traditional bread and salt, representatives of the parish family greeted their spiritual father with expressions of gratitude and love, asking for his archpastoral blessing upon the parish community and all who had gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Spirit.

The Feast of Pentecost, observed fifty days after the glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles in Jerusalem, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-11). This sacred event marks the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to send the Comforter and is traditionally regarded as the birthday of the Church. Through the coming of the Holy Spirit, the frightened disciples were transformed into courageous witnesses of the Gospel, empowered to proclaim the saving message of Christ to all nations.

The Orthodox Church celebrates Pentecost as the revelation of the Holy Trinity to humanity. While the Father’s love was revealed throughout salvation history and the Son was manifested through His Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection, Pentecost reveals the abiding presence and action of the Holy Spirit within the life of the Church. Through the Spirit, believers receive the grace of sanctification, illumination, and communion with God.

Presiding at the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Antony was assisted by Deacon Adrian Mazur, while seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary prayerfully participated in the liturgical celebration. The cathedral choir offered beautiful and inspiring responses, filling the temple with sacred hymnography proclaiming the glory of the Holy Trinity and the life-giving descent of the Holy Spirit.

During his homily, Metropolitan Antony reflected upon the transformative power of Pentecost and its continuing significance in the lives of Orthodox Christians today.

“Pentecost is not merely a historical remembrance,” Metropolitan Antony preached. “It is a living reality. The same Holy Spirit who descended upon the Apostles continues to dwell within the Church, guiding, strengthening, and sanctifying the People of God. Every Divine Liturgy, every sacrament, every sincere prayer becomes an encounter with the life-giving grace of the Holy Spirit.”

His Eminence further reminded the faithful that Christians are called to become vessels of the Spirit in a world often marked by division, uncertainty, and spiritual confusion.

“The Holy Spirit transforms fear into courage, despair into hope, and isolation into communion. As Orthodox Christians, we are called to allow the Spirit of God to renew our hearts so that the world may see Christ through our words, our actions, and our love for one another.”

The celebration was further enriched as numerous faithful approached the Holy Chalice to receive the Most Holy Eucharist, uniting themselves mystically with Christ and one another through participation in the Body and Blood of the Lord. The atmosphere within the temple reflected the joy and peace that characterize the Feast of Pentecost, as prayers ascended for the Church, for Ukraine, for peace throughout the world, and for all those suffering from hardship and conflict.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the faithful participated in the moving service of the Kneeling Prayers of Pentecost, one of the most beloved traditions of the Orthodox Church. After standing throughout the Paschal season as witnesses to the Resurrection, the faithful knelt in humility before God, asking the Holy Spirit to renew their lives, bless the Church, and grant rest to all departed servants of God.

At the conclusion of the services, Fr. Todor Mazur expressed heartfelt gratitude to Metropolitan Antony for his archpastoral presence and spiritual encouragement. The Metropolitan, in turn, thanked the pastor and parish family for their steadfast faith, devotion, and commitment to the life of the Church.

The faithful then gathered for a festive luncheon prepared by parish volunteers in honor of the parish feast day. In a spirit of Christian fellowship and mutual love, clergy and faithful shared a meal together, continuing the celebration around the common table. Metropolitan Antony spent time among the parishioners, offering words of encouragement, listening to their stories, and sharing in the joy of the community.

As the day drew to a close, the faithful departed strengthened by prayer and renewed by the grace of the Holy Spirit. The celebration served as a powerful reminder that Pentecost is not simply a commemoration of an event long past but the ongoing life of the Church, in which the Holy Spirit continually gathers, sanctifies, and guides the faithful toward the Kingdom of God.

Through the prayers of the Holy Apostles and by the grace of the All-Holy, Good, and Life-Creating Spirit, may all who celebrated this sacred feast be renewed in faith, strengthened in hope, and inspired to proclaim the Gospel of Christ to the world.

Животворче Свято П’ятидесятниці у Свято-Троїцькій Українській Православній Катедрі в Нью-Йорку

НЬЮ-ЙОРК, НЬЮ-ЙОРК - З піднесеними у молитві та подяці Всемогутньому Богові серцями вірні Свято-Троїцької Української Православної Катедри в Нью-Йорку радісно зібралися для святкування Великого і Святого празника П’ятидесятниці, одного з найсвященніших і найбільш богословськи глибоких свят Православної Християнської Церкви. Особливої урочистості святкуванню надала архіпастирська присутність Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США, який очолив Божественну Літургію у співслужінні духовенства, за участі семінаристів та численних вірних.

Увійшовши до храму, Митрополита Антонія тепло привітав настоятель парафії прортоієрей Тодор Мазур разом із членами Парафіяльної Управи та вірними громади. Підносячи традиційний хліб-сіль, представники парафіяльної родини зустріли свого духовного батька зі словами вдячності та любові, просячи його архіпастирського благословення для парафіяльної громади та всіх, хто зібрався на святкування празника Святого Духа.

Свято П’ятидесятниці, яке відзначається на п’ятдесятий день після славного Воскресіння Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, пригадує зішестя Святого Духа на Апостолів у Єрусалимі, як про це свідчить книга Діянь Святих Апостолів (Діян. 2:1-11). Ця священна подія знаменує виконання Христової обітниці послати Утішителя і традиційно вважається днем народження Церкви. Через прихід Святого Духа налякані учні Христові стали мужніми свідками Євангелія, сповненими сили проголошувати спасенне послання Христове всім народам.

Православна Церква святкує П’ятидесятницю як об’явлення людству Пресвятої Тройці. Якщо любов Бога Отця відкривалася протягом усієї історії спасіння, а Син Божий явив Себе через Своє Воплочення, Розп’яття і Воскресіння, то П’ятидесятниця відкриває постійну присутність і дію Святого Духа в житті Церкви. Через Святого Духа вірні отримують благодать освячення, духовного просвітлення та єднання з Богом.

Під час Божественної Літургії Митрополитові Антонію співслужив диякон Адріан Мазур, а семінаристи Свято-Софіївської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії молитовно брали участь у богослужінні. Катедральний хор виконував прекрасні та натхненні піснеспіви, наповнюючи храм священною гімнографією, яка прославляла Пресвяту Тройцю та животворче зішестя Святого Духа.

У своїй проповіді Митрополит Антоній роздумував над преображаючою силою П’ятидесятниці та її невичерпним значенням для життя православних християн сьогодні.

«П’ятидесятниця - це не лише історичний спомин», - проповідував Митрополит Антоній. - «Це жива реальність. Той самий Святий Дух, Який зійшов на Апостолів, продовжує перебувати в Церкві, провадячи, укріплюючи та освячуючи Божий народ. Кожна Божественна Літургія, кожне Таїнство і кожна щира молитва стають зустріччю з животворною благодаттю Святого Духа».

Його Високопреосвященство також нагадав вірним, що християни покликані бути посудинами Святого Духа у світі, який часто позначений поділами, невизначеністю та духовною розгубленістю.

«Святий Дух перетворює страх на мужність, відчай на надію, а самотність на справжнє єднання. Як православні християни, ми покликані дозволити Духові Божому оновлювати наші серця, щоб світ міг побачити Христа через наші слова, наші вчинки та нашу любов один до одного».

Святкування було ще більше збагачене тим, що численні вірні приступили до Святої Чаші, щоб прийняти Пресвяту Євхаристію, містично єднаючись із Христом та між собою через причастя Тіла і Крові Господніх. Атмосфера храму була сповнена радості та миру, властивих празнику П’ятидесятниці, а молитви підносилися за Церкву, за Україну, за мир у всьому світі та за всіх, хто страждає від труднощів і воєнних конфліктів.

Після Божественної Літургії вірні взяли участь у зворушливому чині коліноприклонних молитов П’ятидесятниці, однієї з найулюбленіших традицій Православної Церкви. Після того як протягом усього Пасхального періоду вони стояли як свідки Воскресіння Христового, цього дня вірні зі смиренням схилили коліна перед Богом, просячи Святого Духа оновити їхнє життя, благословити Церкву та дарувати упокоєння всім спочилим рабам Божим.

Наприкінці богослужінь о. Тодор Мазур висловив щиру вдячність Митрополитові Антонію за його архіпастирську присутність і духовне наставництво. У свою чергу Митрополит подякував настоятелеві та парафіяльній родині за їхню непохитну віру, відданість та жертовне служіння Церкві.

Після цього вірні зібралися на святковий обід, приготований стараннями парафіяльних волонтерів на честь храмового празника. У дусі християнського братерства та взаємної любові духовенство і миряни розділили спільну трапезу, продовжуючи святкування за братньою гостинною бесідою. Митрополит Антоній перебував серед парафіян, звертаючись до них зі словами підтримки, вислуховуючи їхні життєві історії та розділяючи радість громади.

В миті коли святковий день добігав до завершення, вірні залишали храм духовно укріпленими молитвою та оновленими благодаттю Святого Духа. Святкування стало потужним нагадуванням про те, що П’ятидесятниця є не лише спомином події далекого минулого, але й живою реальністю Церкви, в якій Святий Дух безперестанно збирає, освячує та провадить вірних до Царства Божого.

Молитвами святих Апостолів та благодаттю Всесвятого, Благого і Животворчого Духа нехай усі, хто святкував цей священний празник, оновляться у вірі, зміцняться в надії та надихнуться сміливо проповідувати Євангеліє Христове всьому світові.
