Subdeacon Paul Neal Ordained to the Deaconate

of the Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA

This past Sunday was celebrated with a milestone in the parish of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Dixonville, PA.  Subdeacon Paul Neal, a member of the parish for more than 49 years was ordained to the Deaconate through the laying on of hands by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel.  His friends, family, and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ shared in the celebration of the ordination and Divine Liturgy.

Deacon Paul, a graduate of St. Sophia’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ, is a retired pharmacist. However, his lifelong thirst for knowledge and his faith in God called him next to become a deacon.  It is through this path that he has led by example, showing not only his family, but his fellow parishioners the way to walk in the Light of Christ.

The faithful, led by parish priest Protopresbyter George Hnatko, along with (Fr. Paisius McGrath, Fr. Andrei Alexiev, Fr. Matthew Conjelko and Fr. John Horosky) from nearby parishes, greeted His Eminence Archbishop Daniel and welcomed him to the 102-year old “little church in the hills.”  His Eminence thanked the parish for helping to keep the Orthodox faith alive in the United States of America and provided his wisdom on the importance of following the rules not only in life but within the faith.  Fellow seminary brothers, now deacons, Ivan Tchopko and Evan O’Neill led Paul through his first steps as a Deacon.  Subdeacons Mykola Zomchak, Yurii Bobko and Ihor Protsak sang for the liturgy, while seminarians Yaroslav Bilohan and Ivan Venhren served at the altar with the clergy.

After the ordination, a luncheon was held in St. John’s church hall complete with a delicious cake made by Deacon Paul’s eldest daughter.  St. John’s parishioners worked tirelessly to help make this beautiful fall day a memorable one for all. May the Lord grant his servant Deacon Paul and all the members of St. John the Baptist parish many blessed years.
