On Sunday August 25, a celebration of the 28th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine took place at the Metropolia Center of Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook/Somerset, New Jersey.

The celebration began with a festive Sunday Divine Liturgy at St. Andrew Memorial Church. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Archbishop Daniel led the service. Very Rev. Yuriy Siwko, Very Rev. Ivan Lyzsyk and Deacon Valentyn Olyjnyk concelebrated with the Archbishop. In the temple gathered a large number of parishioners who, with gratitude to God for all blessings and especially for the sovereignty of their native homeland, came to be part of the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion. In his sermon, Archbishop Daniel made note of the importance of human choice and the ability of the right choice that we make in our daily lives to lead us to salvation. Also, the Archbishop greeted all the parishioners on the anniversary of independence and, having blessed everyone, wished Ukraine God's protection and peace. At the end of the liturgy, at the request of the hierarch, the choir, under the direction of Dr. Michael Andrec, sang in harmony with the gathered faithful the Church anthem of Ukraine "Bozhe Velykyi Edynyi".

Following the liturgical celebration, a celebratory luncheon and concert took place on the 28th anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine. The luncheon began with a prayer, led by Archbishop Daniel. After the prayer, seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary beautifully sang the Ukrainian anthem; following which, all in attendance were asked to stand for a moment of silence to honor all of those who laid their lives for the independence of Ukraine. The concert was filled with the musical presentations of Natalia Veinburger and seminarians of St. Sophia Seminary.

During the meal, all present could taste the delicious Ukrainian dishes and homemade desserts prepared by the Pokrova Sisterhood of St. Andrew Memorial Church under the leadership of Dobrodijka Lesia Siwko.

The celebration of this Independence Day once again brought to people many positive emotions and pride for their homeland and their nation.
