Beloved in Christ,

September is nationally recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time when we, as the Church of Christ, are called to open our hearts in prayer, compassion, and concrete acts of love toward the most vulnerable among us - our children.

Each year in the United States, approximately 15,780 children between birth and 19 years of age are diagnosed with cancer. This means that 1 in every 285 children will hear the words no parent ever wants to hear before reaching their 20th birthday. Globally, the numbers are even more staggering: over 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Every three minutes, somewhere in the world, a family is devastated with the news that their child has cancer. Despite medical advancements, cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in America. Over the past forty years, childhood leukemia diagnoses have increased by 35%, reminding us that this struggle continues to affect countless families.

As our children return to school this fall, we cannot forget those who are not able to sit behind a desk in a classroom. Some remain in their homes, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers, where their daily “lessons” are not math, science, or literature, but courage, endurance, and faith in the face of suffering. They too are part of our parish families, our neighborhoods, our nation, and our world.

The Lord Himself reminds us: “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 19:14). Christ entrusted us with the sacred stewardship of life, which demands that we especially protect, comfort, and serve those who cannot defend themselves.

This month, we, the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, call upon all clergy, faithful, and parish communities to:

• Offer prayers for the children battling cancer, and for their families who walk alongside them in faith and love.
• Reach out with pastoral care, visiting homes and hospital rooms, offering Christ’s presence through your words and deeds.
• Support parents - who carry the cross of their children’s suffering - with practical assistance, compassion, and community initiatives.
• Develop parish projects that bring joy to these children: whether through small gifts, cards of encouragement, virtual classroom connections, or parish fundraising efforts for research and treatment support.
• Reach out to the local hospital in your community. Find out what the needs are, and offer your assistance, love, and care - especially through material gifts that could benefit children battling cancer and their parents, as well as the caregivers who stand beside them. Such efforts become visible symbols of God’s presence and love.

As one Christian family, we must remind these children and their parents that they are not alone. The Church stands beside them with the love of Christ.

Let us also reflect personally: How can I, as a steward of God’s gifts, bring comfort, healing, and joy into the life of a suffering child? How can our parish become a beacon of hope for those who endure such heavy burdens?

We leave you with the words of St. John Chrysostom: “The rich are not those who have much, but those who give much. For what they give away remains theirs forever.” This September, let us give of ourselves - our time, prayers, and resources - so that Christ’s light may shine in the lives of the little ones who bear this heavy cross.

Вересень на національному рівні визнано Місяцем обізнаності про дитячий рак. Це час, коли ми, як Церква Христова, покликані відкрити свої серця в молитві, співчутті та конкретних актах любові до найвразливіших серед нас - наших дітей.

Щороку у Сполучених Штатах приблизно у 15, 780 дітей віком від народження до 19 років діагностують рак. Це означає, що кожна 285-та дитина почує слова, які жоден з батьків ніколи не хоче чути, до досягнення свого 20-річчя. У світовому масштабі цифри ще більш вражаючі: понад 300, 000 дітей щороку діагностують рак. Кожні три хвилини десь у світі сім'я спустошена новиною про те, що їхня дитина хвора на рак. Незважаючи на медичний прогрес, рак залишається провідною причиною смерті від хвороб серед дітей в Америці. За останні сорок років кількість діагнозів дитячої лейкемії зросла на 35%, що нагадує нам, що ця боротьба продовжує впливати на незліченну кількість сімей.

Коли наші діти повертаються до школи цієї осені, ми не можемо забути про тих, хто не може сидіти за партою в класі. Деякі залишаються вдома, в лікарнях чи реабілітаційних центрах, де їхні щоденні «уроки» – це не математика, природничі науки чи література, а мужність, витривалість і віра перед обличчям страждань. Вони також є частиною наших парафіяльних сімей, наших районів, нашої нації та нашого світу.

Сам Господь нагадує нам: «Пустіть дітей приходити до Мене, і не забороняйте їм, бо таких Царство Небесне» (Матвія 19:14). Христос довірив нам священне управління життям, яке вимагає, щоб ми особливо захищали, втішали та служили тим, хто не може захистити себе сам.

Цього місяця ми, Собор єпископів Української Православної Церкви США, закликаємо все духовенство, вірних та парафіяльні громади:

• Молитися за дітей, які борються з раком, та за їхні родини, які йдуть поруч з ними у вірі та любові.
• Опікуватися ними з пастирською опікою, відвідуючи домівки та лікарняні заклади, пропонуючи присутність Христа своїми словами та ділами.
• Підтримувати батьків, які несуть хрест страждань своїх дітей, надаючи практичну допомогу, співчуття та громадські ініціативи.
• Розробляти парафіяльні проекти, які приносять радість цим дітям: чи то через невеликі подарунки, листівки підбадьорення, віртуальні класи, чи парафіяльні зусилля зі збору коштів на дослідження та підтримку лікування.
• Звертайтеся до місцевої лікарні у вашій громаді. Дізнайтеся про їхні потреби та запропонуйте свою допомогу, любов та турботу, особливо через матеріальні подарунки, які можуть бути корисними для дітей, які борються з раком, та їхніх батьків, а також опікунів, які стоять поруч з ними. Такі зусилля стають видимими символами Божої присутності та любові.

Як одна християнська родина, ми повинні нагадувати цим дітям та їхнім батькам, що вони не самотні. Церква стоїть поруч з ними з любов’ю Христа.

Давайте також поміркуємо особисто: як я, як отримувач Божих дарів, можу принести втіху, зцілення та радість у життя дитини, яка страждає? Як наша парафія може стати маяком надії для тих, хто несе такі важкі тягарі?

Залишаємо вас зі словами святого Івана Златоуста: «Багатий не той, хто багато має, а той, хто багато віддає. Бо те, що вони віддають, залишається їхнім назавжди». Цього вересня давайте віддамо себе - свій час, молитви та можливості - щоб світло Христове сяяло в житті маленьких, які несуть цей важкий хрест.

З архіпастирським благословенням ми обіймаємо всі сім'ї, чиї діти страждають від раку. Нехай цілюща сила Господа і Спасителя нашого Ісуса Христа дарує їм силу, мир і втіху.
