On the evening of October 20, 2023, the miraculous icon of the Birth-Giver of God, Kardiotissa, “The Tender Heart” arrived at the parish of St. Panteleimon Parish, in Brooklyn, NY.  The church was filled with faithful who were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the miraculous icon, which had previously visited their church five years before during Great Lent on the eve of the Annunciation.  The first visit was such a powerful experience for the parish that they enthusiastically prepared for months for her return visit, and now filled the church hours before her arrival in joyous anticipation.

A procession, led by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, Ruling Hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, greeted the arrival of the icon, and as the Tropar was changed, led her inside the church to the people who awaited her with anticipation.  Carried in by the caretake of the icon, Fr. Mark Leasure, from Taylor, PA, the icon was placed on the central table, tetrapod, in the nave.  Nestled among the lovely flowers, the soft face and of the Birth-Giver of God exuded love for all her children. 

As people crowded in and craned their necks to get a glimpse of the icon, a moving moleben (liturgical service of supplication and thanksgiving) was served by Archbishop Daniel, assisted by parish priest, Fr. Vasyl Shak, Fr. Eugene Papas of the Greek Orthodox Church, Fr. Mark Leasure, along with local priests of the UOC of the USA Fr. Roman Shak, Fr. Teodor Mazur, Fr. Stephen Mjoined by clergy of the Greek Orthodox Church Fr. Stepan Motychak, Fr. Vitaliy Pavlykivskiy, Fr. Ivan Tchopko, and Dn. Pavlo Vysotskyi.

The beautifully chanted responses and hymns sung by the seminarians of the Saint Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, in Ukrainian, English, and Greek, moved all who listened.  The deep voices of the young men echoed through the church adding a sense of the mystical to the service.  After the reading of the Gospel, Archbishop Daniel delivered a moving and thought-provoking sermon.  He posed a question to all listening – why are they here?  What did they come to find?  What are they expecting to gain from attending?  Many people come expecting a miracle.  However, the icon is not a talisman of some sort.  One cannot simply touch it and expect that something wonderful will happen.  Instead one must believe, and through their faith in Christ, they will receive the Grace of the Lord, through the icon.  If one does not believe, if one does not have Christ in their hearts, they will go away empty-handed.  It is our belief that saves us, and that we are not to forget that Christ is with us every day, wherever we are, if we believe.  Therefore, he asked that the people open their hearts, allow themselves to be led by their faith in Christ, and humbly approach the Birth-Giver of God and ask for her intercessions.

His Eminence also spoke of a priest in Ukraine who fleeing the Russian invasion with his family near Mariupol, stopped by the church where he served and took away the Holy Gifts from the Altar which are the most precious treasure to any priest of layperson of faith, ensuring that they would not be destroyed by the enemy.  Presenting another icon to the people, His Eminence explained that this icon of the Mother-of-God was written at the very start of the war, on the board taken from an ammunition box.  The tools of war and destruction, used for salvation.  The icon which was resides at the Metropolia Center of the UOC of the USA, was brought to this evening and anointed with the miraculous myrrh from the Kardiotissa icon, thereby bringing that Grace back to the center and availing countless other faithful from experiencing their own miracles through the intercessions of the Most Holy Mother-of-God and Virgin Mary.

At the conclusion of the service Fr. Vasyl Shak, followed by Fr. Eugene Papas and Fr. Mark Leasure, all addressed the faithful explaining how each one feels in the presence of the Kardiotissa icon.  Her presence in unmistakable. With this knowledge and realization the faithful rose and patiently moved forward to have their own personal moment with the Bohoroditsia.  Tears sparkled as people were moved in her presence, opening their hearts to her, laying down their burdens, and anticipating her loving care and intercession.  As the people came forward, the seminarians solemnly sang numerous hymns to the Mother-of-God, making the entire experience even more spiritually moving and edifying.

The icon remained in the church through Saturday, October 21^st, and was constantly accompanied by the faithful who remained overnight with her, praying, singing and reading the Psalter.  All through the night the darkness outside was broken by the soft yellow glow of candlelight from within the church, joined by the soft sounds of singing and chanting which carried upon the wind into the dreams of those who slept in the homes nearby.

On Saturday morning a Divine Liturgy along with an Akathist to the Mother-of-God were served in the once again crowded church before the icon was lifted up and processed out of the church to return to her permanent home in Taylor, PA.  The people escorted the icon, many stood on the steps, while others crowded the sidewalk to bid her farewell.  People waved and cried as if bidding farewell to a loved one, which is exactly what they were doing.  As the car drove away, the people returned to their own homes, knowing that the Mother-of-God had not truly left them, and that Christ, His Mother, and all His saints and angels are with them at all times.

Holy Mother of God save us!

Ввечері 20 жовтня 2023 року Божого до парафії прибула чудотворна ікона «Кардіотіса», на яку у храмі з нетерпінням чекали вірні, щоб знову Її зустріти як це було 5 років тому назад, коли ця чудотворна ікона прибула до парафії вперше на передодні Свята Благовіщення у часі Великого Посту. Вірні, пригадуючи Її перше прибуття, ревно готувалися на протязі двох місяців зустріти таку Велику Святиню у молитві та в черговий раз прийти і приклонитися до Неї.

Ікону Божої Матері, яку привіз покровитель цієї ікони о. Марк Ліжур із містечка Тейлор, штат Пенсільванія, зустріла процесія духовенства на чолі з Архиєпископом Даниїлом. Під спів тропаря Свята Ікона була внесена до Храму та покладена у зазделегідь прикрашений квітами кивот. Відразу після занесеня ікони до храму було відслужено молебень до Пресвятої Борогодиці, який очолив наш Владика Даниїл у співслужінні місцевих священиків -- настоятеля храму, о. Василя Шака, настоятель грецької громади архімандрит Юджіна Папаса, о. Марка Ліжур, о. Романа Шака, о. Тодора Мазура, о. Степана Мотичака, о. Віталія Павликівського, о. Івана Чопко та диякон Павла Висоцького. Семінаристи Свято Софіївської Української Православної Духовної Семінарії, які чарівними голосами прикрасили спів молебня на трьох мовах (українською, англійською та грецькою) в кінці боголужіння також виконали духовні піснеспіви до Пресвятої Владичиці Богородиці.

Після читання Святої Євангелії Високопреосвященніший Архиєпископ Даниїл виголосив проповідь до людей, у якій зазначив про важливість нашого духовного стану, з яким ми підходимо до чудотворної ікони. Він запитував вірян про те, чому вони приходять до храму та на що саме вони прийшли подивитися?  А також зазначив, що якщо підходити до ікони без належної віри в серці та благоговіння, то бажане обдаровування від Богородиці не можна буде отримати. Владика  наголосив і про ласки Божі,  які ми отримуємо щоденно від Бога, через Його піклування і любов до нас.  У проповіді  Архієпископ Даниїл поділився розповіддю про одного священика, який тікав з окупованих територій біля м. Маріуполя, рятуючи свою сім’ю, пішов до храму в якому служив, щоб забрати Святі Христові Тайни. Ці Святі Тайни є найдорогоціннішим скарбом для кожного священнослужителя та мирянина Церкви Христової, і щоб вороги не могли знищили Їх. А також Владика привіз із Центру Митрополії ікону, яка написана на дошці з ящика для боєприпасів. Цю ікону написав художник ще на початку вторгнення російської федерації на територію України. Перед початком поклоніння вона була помазана цілющим миром від ікони Кардіотіса.

В кінці молебня до вірних звернулися зі словом о. Василь Шак, архімандрит Юджін Папас та о. Марк Ліжур. Кожен висловив свій стан душі, який відчуває перед Іконою Кардіотіса. Коли настав час, щоб вірні змогли приложитися до ікони, усі благоговійно чекали свого моменту, щоб підійти і попросити Пресвяту Богородицю наділити їх своїми ласками і щедротами. Приходило багато вірних увесь час перебування ікони у храмі до суботи 21 жовтня.  Усю ніч лунала молитва та церковні пісні. Парафіянами церкви був прочитаний увесь Псалтир до Богородиці. Зранку в суботу була звершена Божественна Літургія та Акафіст до Богородиці. І вже близько обіду перед Іконою Кардіотіса проспівали церкону пісню «Під Твою Милість» і після цього ікона була винесена із храму. На сходах при виході поблагословили іконою і усі вірні попрощалися, хто зібрався на паперті храму з Іконою Кардіотіса, яка відбула назад до Її постійного місця перебування у м. Тейлор, штат Пенсільванія.
